AIDS Memorial Day and Youth Day Event in Donetsk

   

REDUCING THE STIGMA OF HIV/AIDS IN UKRAINE
Raising Public Awareness to Reduce Discrimination

Since September 2004, IRD has implemented the Reducing Stigma and Discrimination Associated with HIV Infection and AIDS (RSAD) Program in Ukraine, funded by the United States. Agency for International Development (USAID) over a four-year period. By 2008, IRD hopes to raise public awareness and motivate supportive attitudes so that at least 80 percent of the population in two administrative regions, Crimea and Donetsk, express accepting attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS.

Activities:

  • 62 master trainers trained;
  • 1,053 trainer instructors trained;
  • 2,027 peer educators trained; and
  • 1,301 beneficiaries reached.

Developed and Disseminated Publications:

  • 35,000 leaflets on rights of people with HIV and AIDS;
  • 8,000 posters for AIDS day events;
  • 5,000 badges for AIDS Memorial Day and Youth Day;
  • 1,000 pens with USAID/IRD logo and slogans; and
  • Three billboards and 12 city lights were designed and displayed in Donetsk and Simferopol.

Media Interventions:

  • One video clip was produced;
  • 73 newspaper articles published;
  • 26 TV and 13 radio programs aired; and
  • 24 public events organized.

Education of People Living with HIV/AIDS Regarding Their Legal Rights:

  • Legal counseling for people living with HIV/AIDS on their rights and protection; and
  • Representation and protection of people living with HIV/AIDS rights in governmental institutions.

Commodities:

  • One 40-foot container with hygiene kits delivered for people living with HIV/AIDS in Crimea.
