The displacement of Iraqis from Iraq is the fastest-growing refugee crisis in the world; in Jordan alone there could be as many as almost 450,000 Iraqi refugees. This influx is alarming in a country of just 5.5 million people. The problem is compounded by the fact that Jordan already hosts a significant number of Palestinian refugees.
To address the growing problem, IRD has been awarded multiple programs from the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration at the U.S. Department of State to increase access to health care and livelihoods for the most marginalized individuals among the refugee population in Amman. The Strategic Health Support Programs (SHS-1 and SHS-2) serve predominately women-headed households in poor neighborhoods of Amman to cover basic health, mother and child, and post-traumatic stress disorder care. The Community Based Support Program (CBSP) is providing social inclusion, income generation, and vocational training opportunities for the most vulnerable of Iraqi families in Amman, Irbid and Zarqa.
IRD also currently implements the UNHCR-funded Outreach Services for Iraqi Refugees (OSIR) Program funded by UNHCR, and has recently completed the Iraqi Community Services Project (I-CSP) the Emergency Education Assistance (EMT) Project for Iraqi Refugees. The OSIR program is strengthening outreach as a holistic activity encompassing protection assistance, early identification, and rapid intervention measures for vulnerable Iraqi families in Amman, Irbid and Zarqa. The former I-CSP Program focused on reducing isolation, exploitation, and discrimination, and improving the quality of life through basic health awareness and psycho-social screening in the home, advanced psycho-social care for children, and the creation of a Child Disability Unit at the Noor Al- Hussein Foundation/Institute of Family Health (NHF/IFH). Through the EMT project Iraqi refugee volunteers distributed school uniform vouchers, and distributed UNHCR informational materials focusing on such topics as health care, community centers, registration, and other assistance to more than 14,000 refugee families.
In addition to work with Iraqi Refugees in Jordan, IRD currently implements the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Community Mobilization for Partnerships in Schools Project (CMP). The goal of CMP is to develop dynamic community-school partnerships that serve as sustainable mechanisms for the institutionalization of participatory approaches to educational reform and create a sense of ownership and responsibility among all stakeholders within the public school system. Over the course of the two year program, CMP will is tasked with working with schools and their surrounding communities that have received construction and renovation assistance through the ongoing USAID-funded Jordan Schools Construction and Rehabilitation Program (JSP).
